Rembrandt & Me

Eric Armitage

My name is Eric Armitage. I was educated in the USA and received a Bachelor of Arts degree from The University of Washington in Seattle. After a career in the art and design world I moved to the Netherlands in 1999 and took a job in the Rembrandt House Museum in Amsterdam. There, I created a presentation for visitors about how Rembrandt was preparing his paints from linseed oil and natural earthen pigments. A great deal of my skills and knowledge came from classes at Verfmolen de Kat, an old pigment grinding windmill in Zaandam. I returned to the mill a number of times for more advanced instructions. The presentation and demand for the demonstrations grew over the years and became a show that ran 7 days per week. Paint Making (and painting) became my passion. I worked in Rembrandt’s studios for over 21 years, that’s even longer than Rembrandt himself.  I’m so lucky to live down the street from where he lived.
